Fiat factory prepared for production The new production is expected to begin in late 2011, with EUR 100mn to be invested in the factory this year. The new equipment is expected to arrive to the factory in the middle of next year. “Unfortunately, our factory was really old, we are literally changing even the installations that were in the hall, so that all that is left of the old Zastava are the bare walls,” Economy Ministry official Aleksandar Ljubic said. The first phase of preparation was complete, Ljubic said. “The factory has been extended to about 200 hectares. Such a large operative action has not been seen recently in Serbia, especially with deadlines that are so short, with the factory having to begin working by the end of next year,” he said. The Italian Fiat company has yet to reveal information on what model cars would be produced in Kragujevac, but the factory is expected to produce about 300,000 vehicles per year. New jobs are also expected to be created once the factory becomes functional.
