Education Minister Zarko Obradovic said that his ministry plans on asking for money gained from the sale of Telekom for investments in education. “After 19 months at this position, I can say that I am not content with the amount of money being set aside for education, but I am content with the fact that senior state officials are saying that it is important to develop education further in Serbia,” the minister told daily Danas. Education ministry wants funds from Telekom sale Obradovic said that the ministry needs money for many reasons. “When you see the statistic that 95 percent of the Education Ministry’s budget is spent on wages and contributions for employees, and that investments make up only one or two percent, in relation to demands, it is logical that we need money for many things,” Obradovic said. He added that the ministry has a large number of projects for improving infrastructure, school equipment, expert training for teachers, and added that all of this must be on the government’s agenda. Obradovic denied claims that the sale of Telekom is an announcement of early parliamentary elections, adding that it is “a good business decision by the government.” “Most economic experts believe that it would be good for the government to sell Telekom at this moment. That sale is not of an electoral character, it is strategic,” Obradovic said. Zarko Obradovic (Tanjug archive)
