The new landline operator for Serbia will be known by the end of the year, according to Telecommunications Minister Jasna Matic. She said that the service would be much improved as a result. New landline operator to be announced The arrival of competition is expected to end Telekom’s monopoly, and to force it to improve its services, Matic said. This will not cut the cost of services, which are already low, but it should improve the quality for the same amount of money. “The goal is to offer users a joint package of services, so that they will not have to pay different bills for internet, mobile phone and cable television services,” Matic said. Responding to criticism that Telekom should be privatized before a new company was introduced to the market, Matic said that Telekom would be forced to modernize now. “This is competition which will enable more investment in the landline services, which have been overlooked. We must not forget that more than 150,000 citizens have asked for a phone line and have not been able to receive one. We have tens of thousands of dual lines, even in central Belgrade, which is unheard of in the world,” Matic said. She said that operators who wanted to enter the Serbian market had already shown interest, though she did not name any names. Matic said that a company that was already offering television, internet or mobile phone services in Serbia could show interest in landline services as well.
