Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic said that the construction of about 20,000 affordable apartments around Belgrade will begin in March 2010. “The government’s commission, which prepared the material for the massive construction of apartments, will come before the government in early September,” he told journalists after a meeting of government officials and representatives of several domestic construction companies. Mrkonjic announces construction of new apartments Mrkonjic said that the government will back the project by securing subsidies for housing loans, adding that “all citizens” will be able to compete for purchasing one of these apartments. Mrkonjic said that “the price of a square meter will be lower to meet the buying power of the citizens,” who would be paying off loans instead of rent monthly. Minister Mrkonjic did not say what the price per square meter would be, but said that it would at first be close to what a square meter costs on the edge of Belgrade currently—some EUR 500-600. He did not give details on the plans for “massive construction of apartments,” but said that one idea is for “the land which the military owns, and which is not being used, to be given to the construction companies to build on.” He estimated that the construction of 20,000-30,000 apartments would cost about EUR 500-600mn, and that some 100,000 workers could be employed within a year of realizing the project. President of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce Milan Jankovic said that it would be really helpful for this project if the local self-administrations could issue building licenses at a faster pace. Dragan Mijatovic of the Deneza construction company said that the price per square meter will always depend on wages in the country. He said that the best plan is to build on the periphery of Serbia, at locations that are not exclusive, and to give government property to the construction companies at reasonable prices.
