Pančevo fertilizer plant on trial run

Srbijagas General Director Dusan Bajatovic stated Monday that production in Pancevo-based fertilizer producer HIP Azotara is on a trial run. He explained that production at the factory will be restarted in phases so as to have a completed technological process by the end of the week and the first amounts of ammonia produced. Pancevo fertilizer plant on trial run Bajatovic told a news conference at the plant that the preservation of the company means not only saving jobs, but also creating the potential for a better agrarian policy in Serbia. He said that an arrangement was reached in cooperation with the Serbian government and commodity reserves, and with the assistance of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, based on which everything produced in Azotara by the end of 2009 has in effect been sold on a commercial basis. The factory shut down production almost a year ago after a failed privatization and unable to purchase natural gas necessary for its production. Serbia's state-run gas company, Srbijagas, in July because a new owner after acquiring 81.6 percent of shares. This was possible after a government restructuring program proposed that EUR 55mn of the company's EUR 96mn debt to the state and banks be written off. HIP Azotara employs 1,046 workers, who have accepted a pay cut of 50 percent.
