Energy and Mining Minister Petar Skundric says that a meeting of the NIS shareholders assembly will be held on February 10. The assembly is expected to elect a new 11-member board of directors for the company, six of whom will be from Gazpromneft and five from NIS, Skundric told the Tanjug news agency. Contenders vie for place on NIS board “This will create the conditions for beginning the capital investments in NIS and about EUR 550mn will be invested over the next four years,” he said. However, it is still not known who will be representing Serbia’s interests on the board. There are four officials from the Democratic Party and one from the Socialist Party of Serbia in the running while six senior experts are being touted for the Russian side. The Energy and Mining Ministry could not state whether the shortlist of candidates for the board of directors was known. NIS union official Goran Takic said that he did not know the identities of any of the contenders. “The shareholders assembly will see the adoption of a new NIS board of directors, and a new founding act... Whether there will be changes in the statute at this assembly or at another, I’m not sure, but I do know that the statute will soon expire and needs to be changed,” Takic said. According to daily Blic, the NIS board will not include any officials from G17 Plus, while there will be four seats for DS officials and one for an SPS official. G17 Plus leader Mladjan Dinkic refused to enter a board of directors where there were five Serbian and six Russian officials. The daily states that the four DS officials will be Zoran Tanasijevic, the vice president of DS’s committee for cooperation with unions and NGOs; Ivan Bucevac, a Lazarevac municipal official; Aleksandar Cirilovic, president of the DS’s energy committee; and Biserka Jeftimijevic-Drinjakovic, the current president of the NIS board. The SPS will nominate Nikola Martinovic, who was director of NIS Naftagas-Petrol during the Slobodan Milosevic regime. Most of those named already hold some kind of position in NIS. Economic analyst Biljana Korica told B92 that it was important to have clear criteria for selecting the people who would be representing Serbia’s interests in NIS. “It is very important for experts to be on the NIS board, because NIS is a serious investment that will involve investments in the reconstruction of the refinery, and close attention should be paid to make sure that everything is taken care of. At the same time, the interests of the Serbian government must be taken care of as well,” she said. It is fairly clear that Dimity Malishev, who is the current advisor to the president of the Gazpromneft board of directors, will head the NIS board as company CEO.
