Serbia's economic growth is strong, while inflation, following a huge hike, is dropping, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said in a report. IMF said, however, that the overall economic trends indicate that the Serbian economy is still unable to achieve a strong growth and a low inflation rate and, at the same time, to maintain the balance of payments current account deficit at a sustainable level. IMF report on Serbia visit published The IMF mission, headed by Chief of Mission of Serbia Albert Jaeger, visited Serbia from Sept 17 - 24 with the aim of reviewing the current economic trends and prospects. The IMF report said that in 2008 and 2009, Serbia is expected to continue the growth of the GDP at a 6-7 percent rate, but that this increase is too dependent on the banking, purchase and communications sectors. Although economic growth and inflation trends give rise to cautious optimism, the price for achieving them is the unsustainable deficit of the balance of payments current account, which represents the difference between what the citizens of Serbia spend for goods and services and what they earn, so that overall spending this year will top overall earnings by RSD 500bn.
