Seven Serbian companies made the Top 500 list of leading companies in Central Europe. The list was part of a report published today by the Deloitte auditing-consulting company. 7 Serbian companies in Central Europe Top 500 According to the report, the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) was the top earner in 2007, with revenue of EUR 3.6bn, putting it at number 20 on the Top 500 list. The Serbian Electric Company is 79th with revenue of EUR 1.64bn, retail giant Delta M is in 155th place, Smederevo-based U.S. Steel is in 170th, and Srbijagas is in 253rd place. The first three places on the list are occupied by Polish energy company PKN Orlen, which earned EUR 16.86bn in 2007, Hungarian Mol with revenue of EUR 10.32bn, and Czech Skoda, which raked in almost EUR 8bn. Serbian companies make up 1.6 percent of the list. No companies from Bosnia-Herzegovina or Montenegro made the Top 500. Slovenia is most prominent among the former Yugoslav republics, with 18 companies, of which Mercator is the most successful in 40th place, while Croatia has 12 companies listed. Polish companies make up the largest percentage of the list with 176 companies (34.3 percent), followed by the Czech Republic with 15.4 percent, Hungary with 14.1 percent, and Ukraine with 13.4 percent. According to Deloitte, one in every four companies is state-owned, while the others are mostly privately owned. The energy sector accounts for over a third of companies, at 37.9 percent. Deloitte also ranked 100 biggest banks, as well as the 50 largest insurance companies. On the former list, Intesa Bank came 78th, Komercijalna Bank 84th, Raiffeisen 85th, and Hypo-Alpe Adria 89th. Dunav Osiguranje finished 36th on the list of insurance companies and DjOR Novi Sad at number 40. The report adds that the information was gathered from databases open to the public, from the companies themselves, and on the basis of Deloitte experts’ forecasts. Deloitte offers auditing, taxation, business and financial advice to public and private companies in 140 countries and employs 165,000 people.
