A government decree prohibiting export of Serbia's 2007 harvest of wheat and corn is no longer enforced. This was confirmed in Belgrade on Sunday by Ministry of Agriculture State Secretary Danilo Golubovic. Wheat, corn export ban lifted The ban was effectively lifted when the government decided not to extend it once again. The decision came as a result of analyses of the amount of stored grains and estimates of this year's harvest, which Golubovic said is likely to meet the domestic market's demand. This year some 470,000 hectares under wheat are expected to yield from 1.8 to two million tons, while corn sown on 1.3 million hectares should bring a harvest of 6.5 million tons. However, last year, even with the ban in place, 358,000 tons of wheat were exported from Serbia, worth USD 79.5mn, as well as USD 67.7mn-worth of corn. The decree which expired today was passed on Aug. 4, 2007, designed as a measure to counter the draught and dwindling amounts of stored wheat, corn and soybean. The decree was subsequently extended several times.
