Former Bin Laden bodyguard transferred to Montenegro
The Pentagon said that by releasing the Yemeni prisoner, the number of those still held at the U.S. military prison will be reduced to 79."Montenegro now joins other U.S. friends and allies in Europe in accepting multiple detainees for resettlement, bringing us closer to our shared goal of closing the facility," the U.S. State Department special envoy Lee Wolosky told AP, noting his country was "grateful that Montenegro was willing to take in a second prisoner this year."
The agency reported that the United States "cleared Abdel Malik Abdel Wahab al-Rahabi for release in March 2014" but would not send him back to Yemen because of the war there. It then took Washington two years "to find another government which would take in the former Al-Qaeda bodyguard," who was arrested in December 2001 along with another 31 suspected members of the terrorist group.
780 people have been imprisoned there since Guantanamo was set up shortly after the Unites States invaded Afghanistan in late 2001.
