It's official: They're leaving the Middle East
The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is leaving the Middle East, where it had been deployed during the conflict between Iran and the United States, and is returning to its home port of Toulon, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday.
Among the French naval assets deployed in the region are two tripartite minehunters, which could be assigned to an international mission to safeguard shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, an operation proposed by France.
“Accompanied by two frigates and a maritime patrol aircraft, these assets stand ready to contribute, alongside our partners, to the full restoration of freedom of navigation and the security of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” Emmanuel Macron said.
He stressed that France remains fully mobilized and will continue to adjust its military assets in line with developments on the ground and the region's security needs.
Since the memorandum of understanding was signed on June 17, Washington and Tehran have been engaged in negotiations that are expected to last 60 days, with the possibility of an extension, in an effort to reach a lasting end to the conflict in the Middle East.
