Overview of the Day – May 7

U.S. President Donald Trump suspended a naval escort operation for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz after Saudi Arabia stated that it would not allow American aircraft to take off from its territory or fly through its airspace. These restrictions were later lifted.

A senior U.S. official said that American forces struck the Iranian ports of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas, but insisted that the attacks did not represent a formal continuation of the war or the end of the April 7 ceasefire. An Iranian military organization also accused Washington of coordinating with “certain regional countries.”

Iranian state media, meanwhile, reported that air defenses were activated in western Tehran and were “engaging hostile targets.”

U.S. Navy vessels launched an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, after which Iranian forces retaliated by firing missiles. It was later announced that the tanker belonged to China.

According to a Central Intelligence Agency analysis, Iran could survive an American naval blockade for at least four months, despite Donald Trump’s claims that it is crippling the country.

The United States approved arms sales worth 25.8 billion dollars to its allies in the Middle East.

A new round of talks between Lebanon and Israel is expected to begin next week in Washington, with American mediation aimed at reducing Israeli escalation and strengthening the ceasefire as a prelude to the second phase of negotiations.

United States Central Command (CENTCOM) issued the following statement:

“U.S. forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes while U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers were transiting through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman on May 7.

Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones, and small boats while the U.S. ships USS Truxtun (DDG-103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115), and USS Mason (DDG-87) were transiting the international waterway. No U.S. assets were hit.

CENTCOM eliminated incoming threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks on U.S. forces, including missile and drone launch sites; command-and-control locations; and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance nodes.

CENTCOM does not seek escalation, but remains postured and ready to protect U.S. forces.”

According to media reports, at least five American aerial refueling aircraft were spotted above the United Arab Emirates.

Islamic Republic of Iran Army’s Supreme Joint Command accused the United States of violating the ceasefire by targeting two Iranian oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and carrying out airstrikes on civilian areas along Iran’s southern coast in cooperation with “certain regional countries.”

According to the statement, one tanker was targeted near Jask while heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, while another was struck near the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

Tehran also claimed that American forces, “with the cooperation of certain regional countries,” attacked civilian areas near Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and the island of Qeshm.
