And he received a brutal response VIDEO
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confronted Donald Trump very sharply, face to face, reminding the U.S. president how many Europeans died defending Americans in Afghanistan.
Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said, among other things:
“I’m not sure they would be there for us if we called on them,” while trying to promote his plan to buy Greenland from Denmark. “I know them all very well. I’m not sure they would be there. I know we would be there for them. I don’t know if they would be there for us,” the U.S. president added, referring to NATO member countries.
However, he received the most direct possible response from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who “confronted” the U.S. president with reality, reports the Daily Mail.
Rutte told Trump that for every two Americans who died in Afghanistan, one NATO soldier also lost their life.
According to the British newspaper, NATO member countries suffered hundreds of casualties during the war, which was launched following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.
The United Kingdom alone lost 457 soldiers, while France, Germany, Italy, and Denmark also suffered significant losses.
Rutte therefore told Trump: “I heard you say that you’re not absolutely sure whether Europeans would come to the aid of the U.S. if attacked? Let me tell you—they will, and they did in Afghanistan.”
The response came after Trump called Denmark—which had the highest number of casualties per capita among coalition forces in Afghanistan—“ungrateful” for U.S. protection during World War II.
“For every two Americans who paid the highest price, there was one NATO soldier from another country who did not return to their family—from the Netherlands, Denmark, and especially from other countries,” the NATO chief said.

“So, you can be absolutely certain: if the United States were ever attacked, your allies would stand with you. There is an absolute guarantee. I truly want to tell you this because it pains me if you think otherwise,” Rutte told Trump.
In a surprising concession after the meeting with Rutte, the U.S. president stated that the two had agreed on a “framework for a future agreement” regarding Greenland, as well as the “entire Arctic region.”
This means Trump has now abandoned his plan to take over the semi-autonomous territory and dropped the threat of imposing tariffs on the United Kingdom and seven other European countries for standing in his way.
