The engine burn lasting five minutes and 55 seconds “went flawlessly,” NASA’s Lori Glaze stated, after which the launched spacecraft is expected to take the crew farther from Earth than ever before—more than 7,600 kilometers beyond the Moon.

This could allow Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed mission to the Moon in over half a century, to surpass the distance record set by Apollo 13 in 1970, BBC reported. During the first day of the mission, the crew tested Orion’s cameras, navigation systems, and life-support systems, while also addressing minor technical issues, including a toilet malfunction and email difficulties. Astronauts are using GoPro cameras, iPhones, and professional Nikon cameras to document the journey.

The capsule will orbit the Moon and then return to Earth, with the mission expected to last a total of 10 days, according to The Guardian. On the sixth day, the crew will witness a total solar eclipse with views of both Earth and the Moon from the Orion cabin. NASA emphasized that even after the major engine burn, there is a possibility of returning the crew to Earth in an emergency, thanks to prior controls and simulations.

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen said the crew “feels pretty good” and that the journey demonstrates “what humanity is capable of” as they approach the farthest point traveled by humans in space since 1972.
