They're soon arriving where no one has ever been: NASA shares new footage PHOTO/VIDEO
The Artemis II mission will take the crew behind the Moon, farther than ever before, and NASA's new visual depiction reveals what the astronauts will see during the historic flight.
NASA shared on its Instagram profile a visual depiction showing exactly what the Artemis II astronauts will see through their window during the flyby around the Moon.
The Artemis II crew and the lunar science team have been training and preparing for years to make the most of every orbit around the Moon, regardless of lighting conditions.
Now that the crew is on their way to the Moon, we finally know which parts of the lunar surface will be illuminated during their closest approach, while dozens of scientists work diligently behind the scenes in mission control in Houston.
The Artemis II crew is resting ahead of the historic moment
According to NASA, the astronauts are currently sleeping.
“Sweet dreams, Artemis II crew. Another look at the Moon on day six of your flight and your epic flyby around it, which will take you farther into space than humans have ever traveled,” NASA wrote.
This visual follows the trajectory of the Orion spacecraft during the Artemis II mission’s flyby around the Moon and shows what the astronauts will see out the window as they approach the Moon and fly around its distant, far side.
The angle at which sunlight illuminates the Moon will change during this period due to the constant movement of the Sun, Moon, and spacecraft—revealing both familiar areas of the near side of the Moon and portions of its far side that are never visible from Earth.
