Let us recall that the crew of the Artemis 2 mission, part of the U.S. space agency NASA, has made a significant leap in space exploration. The astronauts—Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—are the first humans to observe certain parts of the far side of the Moon with the naked eye, as well as a solar eclipse.

Christina Koch has attracted great attention from both the scientific community and the general public, as she has now officially become the first woman to venture into space. This mission has elevated her career to an entirely new level, making her the first woman to leave low Earth orbit and travel so far into space.

Her achievement has opened the door for future generations of female astronauts, and it is believed that this is just a major beginning for women in astronomy.

“This is an enormous privilege, but also a great responsibility,” Koch said before officially starting the Artemis 2 mission.

Now the question arises – who is Christina Koch?

Christina Koch grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and physics from North Carolina State University, and later a master’s degree in electrical engineering.

Christina Koch works as an electrical engineer at NASA, and she has also worked at Johns Hopkins University, as well as in research positions in Antarctica and Greenland.

Christina Koch has already flown to space once, in 2019, spending 328 days on the International Space Station, which is the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

While on the station, she participated in six spacewalks, including three with fellow astronaut Jessica Meir, marking the first spacewalks conducted solely by women.

NASA has highlighted that her expertise in electrical engineering is highly valuable to the research team, and that she is the only professional engineer on the Artemis 2 mission crew.
