Commandos arrive in the Middle East; Await Trump's order
Several hundred commandos, members of U.S. special operations forces, have arrived in the Middle East, joining thousands of Army Marines and paratroopers, two U.S. military officials said.
Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to The New York Times, said the arrival of the specially trained units is intended to give U.S. President Donald Trump additional options to expand the month-long war with Iran.
The commandos, including Army Rangers and Navy SEALs, have not yet been assigned specific missions, but as specialized ground forces they could be deployed to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has closed, or participate in a mission to seize Kharg Island, an Iranian oil hub in the northern Persian Gulf, officials said.
Potential missions could also include the removal of Iran’s highly enriched uranium from the Isfahan nuclear facility.
The commandos are joining 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 Navy personnel who recently arrived in the region. There are currently more than 50,000 U.S. troops in the Middle East, roughly 10,000 more than usual.
