11 nuclear bombs?
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Wittkof stated that earlier this year, senior Iranian negotiators boasted of controlling 460 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, which would be enough to build 11 nuclear bombs.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that Iranian negotiators were “proud” of their uranium stockpile and claimed during talks earlier this year that they controlled 460 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, an amount that could be enough to build about 11 nuclear bombs.
Witkoff told Fox News that Iranian representatives freely boasted in the first round of negotiations that they had evaded oversight protocols and possessed this highly enriched material, and insisted they had an “inalienable right” to enrich nuclear fuel.
The United States, however, says that American and Israeli strikes last year damaged or destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities, which should limit Tehran’s ability to turn enriched uranium into a functioning weapon.
He added that the enriched uranium could be turned into a bomb within a week to ten days if Iran were able to reuse nuclear facilities that the United States says have been destroyed.
He also stated that U.S. President Donald Trump sent him and envoy Jared Kushner to negotiations with Iran to reach an agreement under which Tehran would eliminate its missile program, stop supporting proxies, reduce its navy, and halt uranium enrichment.
According to him, the negotiations were unsuccessful, and it became clear by the end of the second meeting that an agreement would not be reached.
“We went there and tried to make a fair deal with them, and it became very, very clear that it would be impossible—probably by the end of the second meeting—but we then returned for a third meeting just to try once more. They wanted us to report on the agreement, but that meeting was not productive,” Witkoff said.
