Is it all a bluff?

Donald Trump’s team is presenting the alleged “framework agreement” on Greenland as a diplomatic success, but European diplomatic sources say it is a maneuver that allows the U.S. president to back away from his earlier threats.

According to their assessments, the entire situation surrounding the island, which is under Danish control and thus part of a NATO member state, and which Trump wants to annex to the United States, has caused serious damage to transatlantic relations, Sky News reports.

Does a real agreement even exist?

According to one diplomat involved in the developments, a genuine “framework agreement” on Greenland does not yet exist.

When asked whether this was merely an exit maneuver by Trump, the diplomat replied: “Exactly.”

It is believed that the U.S. president needed a way to back away from his threats after realizing that he would not be able to achieve a takeover of sovereignty over Greenland.

During the meeting in Davos, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterated to Trump the positions of Denmark and Greenland.

Existing commitments from the 1951 agreement between the United States and Denmark were also reaffirmed, and European countries once again pledged to strengthen Greenland’s defense.

Now, according to Index, the level of fatigue among European officials over the actions of the U.S. president is quite high, while Sky News even quoted one European ambassador as saying: “I’m so bored with all of this.”

On Wednesday in Davos, Trump made a series of abrupt reversals.

First, he backed away from the implicit threat of military action, then from the threat of tariffs, and finally from his insistence on taking over sovereignty over Greenland.

It seems Trump realized that his Greenland plans were viewed as unfeasible and counterproductive.

Despite Trump’s reversals, an urgent EU leaders’ summit is still scheduled for today.

Donald, what have you talking about?

Speaking at the World Economic Forum, the U.S. president said that everyone is “very happy” and that a deal on the future of the Arctic territory is underway.

On his Truth Social account, he wrote that the framework of the future agreement covers the “entire Arctic region” and that the “solution” will be excellent for the U.S. and all NATO countries.

He confirmed that he discussed it with other European officials, but nothing has been signed yet and no details have been released.

Trump also stated that the U.S. “will not use force” to take Greenland.

And now what?

The situation has returned to what it was last week, when the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with Trump’s team and agreed to establish a “working group.”

The goal of this group is to find a compromise that addresses Trump’s security concerns without transferring Greenlandic sovereignty. The only new step is Trump’s agreement to include U.S. participants in the working group.

Both sides will now seek a solution.

A likely compromise could resemble the agreement the United Kingdom has with Cyprus regarding military bases.

New American military bases could be established in uninhabited parts of Greenland under a lease or purchase agreement. These areas would become U.S. territory, but Greenland’s sovereignty would remain unchanged.
