Chaos in Germany; Special forces deployed; Entire area blocked off
Another incident has unfolded in Germany, involving a potential new threat to critical infrastructure. This time, a police operation is underway at a substation in Ganderkesee.
According to information from Bild, emergency response teams have surrounded the facility in the Oldenburg district and blocked access to the wider area. A police helicopter is also circling overhead.
For now, police have only referred to “suspicious circumstances,” Telegraf reported.
It is not known what exactly was found at the substation or whether any damage was caused.
However, according to police statements so far, no fire has occurred. The operation is still ongoing, and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is also at the scene, with its teams using floodlights to illuminate the surrounding area.
Attempted attack on the power grid in North Rhine-Westphalia
As a reminder, an incident occurred on Thursday in Dormagen, North Rhine-Westphalia. There, a passerby discovered suspicious devices near a substation.
Police suspect a possible act of sabotage.
According to investigators, the apparent intention was to deliberately cause a short circuit.
Authorities also have a letter claiming responsibility, which refers to similar incidents in Bergheim and Jänschwalde.
According to Bild, the devices found are similar in design to those used in previous cases. Investigators are now examining whether the attacks were carried out by the same perpetrator or the same group.
Authorities are also investigating whether the operation at the substation in Lower Saxony is connected to the suspected act of sabotage in Dormagen.
