"Russia No Longer Has Any Restrictions"
Russia believes it has the right, if necessary, to take steps toward deploying medium- and short-range missiles, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today.
“Russia no longer has any restrictions on this issue. Accordingly, Russia believes it has the right to take appropriate measures if needed. We should hardly expect any public announcements regarding presidential decisions on deploying such systems. After all, this involves the realm of defense—a quite sensitive area that isn't meant for public disclosure,” Peskov stated, as reported by Sputnik.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously declared that Moscow no longer sees any conditions for upholding a unilateral moratorium on the deployment of ground-based medium- and short-range missiles, and therefore no longer considers itself bound by the previously self-imposed restrictions.
Under the now-defunct Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles, both parties had agreed not to produce, test, or deploy land-based ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 1,000 kilometers (short-range) and 1,001 to 5,500 kilometers (medium-range), as well as their launch systems, RIA Novosti reported.
