Although in most of the tennis world Jannik Sinner’s elimination has already been archived and attention has shifted to the Roland Garros final stages, the story in Italy still refuses to settle. Even the historic achievement of three “Azzurri” reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam together for the first time was not enough to overshadow the shock of the world number one’s exit.
Jannik Sinner had control in a match that completely changed its course—he won the first two sets and led 5–1 in the third against Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, the world number 56. However, a dramatic collapse followed: in the next 20 games, he lost 18 and ultimately suffered an elimination that stunned the tennis world.
In Italy, analyses and differing interpretations immediately began, and one of those who sparked debate was former tennis player Roberto Bertolucci.
In the program “Prestup,” he questioned the explanations that emerged after the match, particularly those related to possible issues with heat.
“I don’t want to pretend to be a doctor from 500 kilometers away, but I don’t understand how this could have happened at 30 degrees and just 25 percent humidity.”
He added that the conditions were completely normal for a professional level.
“That is a completely normal temperature; even amateurs and recreational players normally play in it all summer. At his level, that should not be a problem.”
Continuing his analysis, Bertolucci dismissed the possibility of heatstroke.
“So, it could not have been heatstroke. Secondly, when he went to the locker room for treatment, his temperature was measured and he didn’t have a fever. When someone suffers from heatstroke, they have a temperature. And his blood pressure was perfect. These two factors clearly show it was not heatstroke.”
What caused particular controversy was his final remark about possible deeper reasons.
“I am not a doctor, but he and the doctors around him know what it is about. We all know that something exists and that the player has been dealing with it for a long time. Because what happened to him is not normal,” Bertolucci said.
