Djokovic vs. the New Era: Can Novak topple Sinner and Alcaraz in 2026?
Although the tennis world has entered a new era dominated by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on the Grand Slam scene, one name still refuses to step out of the fight – Novak Djokovic.
The British BBC analyzed who could threaten the duo of Sinner and Alcaraz in 2026.
At 38 years old, with 24 Grand Slam titles and the status of the most successful tennis player of all time, Djokovic remains the biggest threat to the “new duo,” despite his age and the decreasing number of tournaments he plays.
Novak is still the world’s third force
Despite a limited schedule, Djokovic finished the season as the world’s fourth-ranked player, and many analysts believe he remains the closest rival to Sinner and Alcaraz.
“Even though he barely played a full season, Novak is still the third-best player on the planet. That says a lot – about him and the rest of the tour,” said Greg Rusedski.
Djokovic has already shown that he can defeat younger rivals even at this stage of his career.
He eliminated Alcaraz at the Australian Open, a tournament he has won ten times and which could represent his greatest chance at a historic 25th Grand Slam.
The biggest challenge – two 'derbies' in a row
Novak’s challenge in 2026 is not just about form, but also the path to the trophy.
To win a Grand Slam, he would almost certainly have to:
-
Defeat either Sinner or Alcaraz in the semifinals
-
Then overcome the other in the final – in best-of-three-set matches
Yet experience, mental strength, and the ability to raise his level when it matters most continue to set him apart from the rest of the competition.
Other challengers – youth and power without Novak’s aura
Although names like Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, and Félix Auger-Aliassime are mentioned, they all share the same problem – a lack of consistency and belief in big matches.
Alexander Zverev, despite his high ranking, still carries the burden of three lost Grand Slam finals, while young prospects like João Fonseca and Jakub Menšík are still far from competing for the biggest trophies.
One question remains
As things stand, if anyone in 2026 can disrupt the absolute dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, it is still – Novak Djokovic.
Age may not be on his side, but history has already taught us that Djokovic should never be counted out.
