Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stanković also pointed out that the goal is to create patriotism as a civic virtue through continuous nurturing and improvement of the culture of speech, mother tongue, literature and artistic creation of the people.

"The idea of the state is that the education system finally starts to become nationally sensitive and that through a certain fund of classes and a certain set of textbooks, national consciousness is created among our students and that on the basis of that we preserve national identity, cultivate tradition and affirm culture, create historical awareness and try to develop a healthy sense of patriotism," the minister said on TV Happy.

He pointed out that developing a sense of patriotism is important because it represents an attempt to respond to the challenge of globalization, which as a process represents the erasure of national identity and the formation of citizenship as a nationally amorphous mass.

"Our idea is to preserve the awareness of who we are and to present ourselves as a nation that has its historical foundations, its values and goals, its ups and downs, as well as its great victories and defeats and to understand history as a teacher of life, as a landmark for making decisions in the present and anticipating a better future," said Stanković.

According to him, the national set of textbooks for members of the Serbian people does not exclude the possibility of forming a national set of textbooks for members of national minorities.

"Our national set of textbooks is not closed to the world, nor to national minorities, because in parallel with the national set for members of the Serbian people, there will be an opportunity to create sets of textbooks for members of national minorities. After all, the 'Institute for Textbooks and Teaching Aids' prints textbooks for elementary and high school students who belong to national minorities, and we will continue to nurture the multicultural dimension of our society," he stated.

Stanković added that the desire to form a national team does not mean that there is a desire for the cultural and educational isolation of the people.

"We believe that, if we are aware of ourselves, we can communicate with other peoples and respect their values, interests and achievements. This is our work on cultural elevation and an attempt to synthesize our culture and to try to build a modern concept of national identity," explained the Minister of Education.

He said that the national set of textbooks will consist of textbooks on the Serbian language and literature, history, geography, and music and art culture, as well as that various publishers will produce these textbooks.

"Different publishers will create those textbooks that will actually have the goal of encouraging the development of national consciousness among students and working to preserve the political, cultural and spiritual identity of the Serbian people," Stanković said.

As he said, one of the goals is to establish standardization in the presentation and interpretation of events.

"One such concept was implemented in Russia. They worked very seriously on how national consciousness is formed through the interpretation of historical events. Russians learn three types of history through the education process. One is general history, the second is national history and the third is the history of warfare in order to form national consciousness through this, as an awareness of the need for the people to realize their freedom through their state," he stated.
