A symbol of an era is decaying: The legendary wreck on the brink of disappearance
The Titanic wreck has lain at a depth of 3,800 meters on the floor of the North Atlantic for over 100 years, but experts warn that it could cease to exist within just a few years, as it is rapidly deteriorating, reports Bild today.
According to the newspaper, the deterioration is caused by microbes that eat away at the steel from which the once-largest ship in the world was built. These microbes form rust-like structures that make the Titanic wreck increasingly fragile year by year. In addition, ocean currents, salt, and the immense pressure at such great depths contribute to the decay.
Terraces and railings on the wreck are breaking off, and large sections of the ship have already collapsed. Underwater footage shows that in many places, only the skeletal remains of the once-famous Titanic are left.
Some researchers warn that in 20 years, the ship could be reduced to little more than a heap of rust on the ocean floor. Other predictions are even more drastic, suggesting that large parts of the wreck could completely disappear by 2030.
At the same time, international expeditions are working to preserve the ship, at least in digital form, for future generations.
Using cutting-edge technology, hundreds of thousands of high-resolution images have been captured to create a three-dimensional model of the wreck. This will allow people to experience the Titanic virtually, even if the original wreck disappears into the depths of the ocean, reports Bild.
The Titanic, built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, was considered the largest ship in the world in 1912. On its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the ship struck an iceberg on the night of April 15 and sank, taking more than 1,500 lives with it.
One thing is certain: the Titanic, which has inspired countless films, books, and exhibitions, will eventually completely collapse on the ocean floor. The question is not if it will happen, but when, the newspaper notes.
