As recently stated by Putevi Srbije, in accordance with the Law on Fees for the Use of Public Goods, the use of TAG devices for Category IV vehicles, i.e., heavy-duty freight vehicles, has been mandatory since January 1. However, this decision was postponed until April 1 to allow everyone time to adjust.

"The mandatory use of TAG devices for Category IV vehicles was introduced to increase traffic flow, reduce congestion at toll booths, improve safety and efficiency within the electronic toll collection (ETC) system, as well as to prepare for the planned introduction of toll collection on lower-category roads for heavy freight vehicles",  Putevi Srbije announced.

As explained, the new system will operate without toll booths, meaning it will become a "free flow" system with no stopping required; vehicles will be automatically identified and tolls charged accordingly. TAG devices will also be compatible with the existing system.

Toll for Trucks on the Belgrade Ring Road

It is worth noting that Darko Savić, Director of the Toll Collection Sector at Putevi Srbije, recently stated that toll collection for heavy freight vehicles will begin on the Belgrade Ring Road starting April 1 and will later be introduced on highway sections that are not yet subject to tolls.

In his address to Tanjug, Savić said that the first phase includes parts of highways that are not currently tolled, such as the Belgrade Ring Road, where toll collection will be introduced for heavy freight vehicles, which have the greatest impact on road maintenance.

When asked which other sections and roads are planned for toll collection and when their integration into the system is expected, Savić stated that, after the Belgrade Ring Road, toll payment will begin on highway sections, specifically all sections beyond the main toll plazas toward border crossings.

"After that, we will move on to expressways. We expect to introduce toll collection first on the expressway from Mala Krsna to Požarevac. Once that entire section is completed, toll collection for heavy freight vehicles will also be introduced there. This involves toll stations and a system that does not include human staff or traditional toll booths, but rather road portals equipped with specific equipment for vehicle detection", he explained.

Savić emphasized that this system is compatible with the existing toll collection system and operates using short-wave technology.
