Deadline ends July 9: Everyone will get notices
US President Donald Trump has said he does not plan to extend the 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries beyond July 9, when his deadline for negotiations expires.
He added that his administration will notify countries that trade sanctions will go into effect if no deal is reached.
Yesterday, in an interview with Fox News, Trump said that notices about the introduction of tariffs to countries with which no agreement can be reached will begin to be sent "fairly soon", as the deadline for reaching negotiations approaches, AP reports.
"We will see how the country treats us, whether it treats us well, or not so well. We are not interested in some countries, we will just send a large number of letters," said Trump.
In those letters, as Trump said, it would be stated - "congratulations, we allow you to buy in the United States of America, you will pay tariffs of 25, or 35, or 50, or 10 percent".
Trump pointed out that negotiations on tariffs will continue, but that "there are 200 countries" and that "you can't talk to all of them".
Speaking about the relationship with China, Trump praised the recently reached trade agreement with Beijing on the export of rare earth elements from China and said that establishing a fairer relationship between the two countries would require significant tariffs.
"I think getting along well with China is a very good thing. China is going to pay a lot of tariffs, but we have a big (trade) deficit, they understand that," Trump said.
He added that he would be open to lifting sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to China if Iran can demonstrate "that it can be peaceful" and if it shows that it "will not do more harm" to the United States.
Trump also indicated that the US is not afraid of Beijing's retaliation, and to the Fox News anchor's comment that China tried to hack American systems and steal intellectual property, Trump replied "don't you think we are doing it to them".
