"No support for Montenegrin, Croat, Macedonian candidates"

Dacic stressed that the UN Security Council recently issued a call for all countries to nominate their candidates for the top UN job. The new secretary-general will take office in 2017 - meaning that they could be elected in the second half of 2016.

"Serbia will make its decision on whether to have its own candidate or support someone else in time," Dacic said.

According to him, Belgrade "certainly cannot support candidates whose political views are contrary to the national and state interests of Serbia."

"This is a very serious position and for that reason Serbia must be careful about whom to support," Dacic told reporters after his meeting in Belgrade with Foreign Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina Igor Crnadak.

Dacic specified that the issue was not whether a candidate was "suitable as a person" but about the policy they represented.

"As it turned out - the position of some regional countries on issues important to Serbia at the international level was contrary to our national interests, regardless of the friendly relations," he remarked.

"Just as they take care of their interests we will take care of ours. To be completely honest, the candidates of Montenegro, Macedonia and Croatia certainly cannot have our support. Would you support a proposal from Albania?," Dacic was quoted as saying.

Crnadak said there had not yet been any discussion in Bosnia-Herzegovina either about having own candidate, or the possibility of supporting that of another country.
