The service on Sunday was held by Serbian Orthodox Church head, Patriarch Irinej, and Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije along with other bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Tanjug reported.

Earlier in the day, the Serbian patriarch served the St. Vitus liturgy at the Gracanica Monastery in the presence of about 1,000 believers, pointing out in his address that "today all Serbs are spiritually present in Kosovo."

Among those in attendance were members of the families of missing and kidnapped Serbs, standing in the front rows carrying photographs of their loved ones.

The Serbian Orthodox Church clergy and provincial officials said that Kosovo was "the icon of the Serbian people, which can be safeguarded only in a united and courageous manner and must never be abandoned."

Metropolitan Amfilohije said that Gazimestan should be a road sign for the future generations, “not only for us, but also for our brothers Albanians", adding that we should all take the sacred road of sacrificing for the greater good, progress and love for our closest ones because there is no greater love than that.

The memorial service at Gazimestan was attended by Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Veljko Odalovic on the behalf of the Serbian government while a great number of members of the Kosovo police and special forces was deployed around the monument.
