Compared to the very beginning of the year, the number of patients in COVID Hospital in Batajnica has increased by ten percent, and currently 346 citizens are being treated in that institution.

The director of that hospital, Dr Tatjana Adzic Vukicevic, stated that about 25 patients were intubated, adding that their condition was as severe as that of patients who were hospitalized in September and October last year, which indicates that it is a delta variant of coronavirus.

Dr Vukičević also points out that, looking at the clinical pictures of the positives, the virus is spreading "like wildfire", and that it can be concluded that the omicron variant is dominant in Serbia.

"The only advantage and improvement in relation to the delta strain is that in more than 90 percent of cases, the virus affects the nose, throat, sinuses and does not descend to the lungs. Fortunately, a large number of citizens complete treatment in clinics", pointed out Dr Adzic Vukicevic.

She emphasizes that everyone who received two or three doses of the vaccine, and then became infected with the omicron variant, can usually treat their condition at home, and that they often do not have a fever but only a headache.

So, they do not need an antibiotic. A small number of them have a secondary bacterial infection, where an antibiotic needs to be given, and those with a fever that lasts for a few days are successfully treated with drugs available in COVID clinics and reception triage centers", explained the director of Kovid Hospital in Batajnica.

When it comes to age structures, Dr Adzic Vukicevic says that there are all groups in this wave, both old and young.

"In front of the COVID infirmaries, lines are 150 meters long, there are mostly young people, but those who are hospitalized are older and we come to what we have been talking about for two years, and that is that young people, who are mostly asymptomatic, are the main carriers of the virus and in that way infect their family members who may have some chronic diseases, so everything is getting harder for them", she said.
