Battle for southern town’s maternity hospital begins Every year between ten and 15 women in the Jablanicki District deliver their babies at home or on their way to hospital due to lack of roads and the fact that they live in remote areas. The only maternity hospital in Leskovac is located 100 kilometers from certain mountain villages in the municipalities of Crna Trava and Medvedja. Medvedja Health Center midwife Rada Lakicevic says she helped 837 women deliver their babies at home or in the ambulance since 1984 when she started working. The Leskovac General Hospital’s Maternity Ward is the only maternity ward in the Jablanicki District which has a population of 260,000 people. 1,700 babies are born at the Leskovac General Hospital’s Maternity Ward every year. During B92’s Battle for Babies campaign, the maternity ward received two modern baby incubators. Gynecology Ward Chief Srdjan Mitic says that the hospital's priority is to replace a 35-year-old reanimation table. The Leskovac General Hospital staff hopes that donors from Leskovac and the district will join the Battle for Maternity Wards campaign and make their work easier. (B92, file) B92
