"We did not get real independence in 1991, but in 2014, when the entire people suddenly realized this is our country and that it is worth fighting for," the ambassador said.

As he put it, Ukraine and Serbia advocate fundamental European values, being members of the Council of Europe and the OSCE.

However, when it comes to "rights and freedom - there is no room for neutrality," he noted.

"Let me raise a toast on behalf of our common democratic values that are the basis of our independence. Long live Serbia! Glory to Ukraine!" Aleksandrovich said.

The reception on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of Ukraine's independence was attended by Serbian political, cultural and public figures, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
