Milivoje Mihajlovic spoke during a news conference on Thursday in Belgrade to describe Nikolic's statement as "irresponsible and dangerous for the state". Opposition leader criticized over Kosovo statement The leader of the Progressives (SNS) spoke during a rally in Kosovska Mitrovica on Wednesday, as he campaigned ahead of the May 6 presidential, parliamentary and local elections. His statement came in reference to the ongoing, EU-sponsored Kosovo dialogue, and its result thus far. "When progress in the negotiating process was a condition to receive candidature (for EU membership) such statements coming from participants in the election process could have jeopardized our relations with the EU, but also the region's stability," said Mihajlovic. He added that the Serbian government was "solving problems" in Kosovo and Metohija through dialogue and peaceful means, and "fully in line with international law and Serbia's Constitution, protecting state and national interests, as well as the survival of Serbs in Kosovo". Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic - who is a high ranking official in Boris Tadic's ruling Democratic Party (DS) - also reacted by saying that he "wishes to believe" that the SNS leader was "uninformed or lacked diplomatic experience" when he made the statement. Nikolic, who is ahead of Tadic in the latest opinion polls, spoke on Wednesday criticizing his election rival, who last week resigned as the country's president but will seek a third term in office on May 6.
