Elections won’t change long term outlook, says expert

Judah said that all the parties in the democratic bloc had powerful cards to play in the upcoming negotiations for the new cabinet and gave the Radicals less than minimal chances of finding a coalition partner that would bring them into government.

Judah argued that they were most probably content to keep the role of a strong opposition party.

In regard to the effects the current electoral results will have on the process of determining Kosovo's future status, Tim Judah said that the negotiations within the democratic bloc might delay things a little but would probably not significantly change the long term outlook.

The reason for this, according to the Balkans expert, was that the main players were now Russia on one side and Western countries on the other who favor independence.

Tim Judah also predicted that the sooner a government of the democratic bloc could be constituted the sooner the process of European integration could be continued predicting that the EU, like NATO last year, would quietly shelve its demand for general Ratko Mladić to be arrested and that talks on an SAA would be resumed.
