Đinđić’s Kosovo letter

Šuklje said that these letters which the late Serbian prime minister sent in early February 2003 were sent to officials in Germany, the presidents of Russia and the US, and the prime minister of Great Britain.

The member countries of the United Nations Security Council were also made aware of the letter’s contents, and Đinđić believed, according to Šuklje, that the people who received the letters must be convinced that Kosovo is a question that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible, because a new state territory must be defined and a new constitution must be passed, all which is needed to free Serbia from the burdens of its past.

Šuklje said that Đinđić then believed that the worst thing that Serbia can do is wait, because the situation will get better in the meantime and people will take that as evidence that the institutions of an independent Kosovo can function properly, and if the situation does not get better, a massive exodus of Serbs from the region will ensue.

“In both cases, the possibility of an independent Kosovo increases, that is whzy we have to take the initiative.” Šuklje quoted the late prime minister.

Šuklje said that Đinđić’s letters did not receive the greatest reception back then, because at that time it was expected that the international community would continue to insist on the discussion of standards, and later about the political issues in Serbia, and believed that it was not time to start discussing the issue.

Šuklje said that there should have been a meeting of the Serbian and Kosovo Albanian senior officials back in February 2003, and that even at that time, “Belgrade would be offering everything put independence and Priština would be demanding only independence.”

Even though the Belgrade and Priština delegation have completely opposing stances, Šuklje said that it is important for the most important stances to be put on the table in Vienna now and to look at the political possibilities and the readiness of the Serbian and Kosovo Governments for promotion realistic solutions to the national public.

“At the same time, it is clear to everyone that an agreement is being looked for, not a new centre of crisis. Only realistic solutions are needed, without winners or losers, ones which will secure the further stability of the region.”  Šuklje said.
