BARCELONA Separatist parties in Spain's Catalonia region have won the local elections, but the ruling CIU coalition did not win an absolute majority. The CIU - a technical center-right alliance of the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia and the Democratic Union of Catalonia - which has so far had 62 seats, won 50 out of 135 seats in the regional assembly, while also separatist, but leftist Republican Party (ERC), was given 21 seats. Catalonia: Separatist parties win in regional elections During the elections - ahead of which CiU leader Artur Mas said that a referendum on independence would be called in case of the coalition's victory - saw a record turnout of voters, 68 percent - ten percent more than the previous polls two years ago. Both ERC and CIU and advocate for secession from Spain, which could see them join forces and launch a referendum on independence, although Mas did not get an absolute majority to which he counted. His election rallies saw participants carry the flag of the European Union, and Mas was also quoted as saying that an independent Catalonia would "quickly became a member of the EU", the BBC reported. When the election results started coming in, Mas said he would launch consultations, because he wanted to put the issue of independence to the negotiating table. However, an independent Catalonia is still far away. The right-wing Spanish government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says that a referendum on independence would be contrary to the Constitution and common sense, and cause damage to all Spaniards. According to a poll conducted by the Spanish newspaper El Pais such a referendum would see 46 percent of Catalans vote for, and 42 percent against. Artur Mas (Beta/AP) Tanjug
