BRUSSELS European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said that the EU enlargement continues, pointing in particular at countries in the western Balkan region. "Enlargement continues, in particular in countries in the western Balkan region, an area where all the countries have but one hope: to one day belong to the EU and the European family," he told an annual conference in Brussels on Wednesday. Enlargement will continue, EU official says Rompuy said that the Western Balkans’ EU perspective was one of his priorities, AFP has reported. He stressed that the EU accession negotiations with Turkey had “practically stalled”. "I admit that negotiations (with Turkey) on enlargement have practically stalled" over the Cyprus issue, Van Rompuy told ambassadors meeting in Brussels. He urged the EU and Turkey to maintain “intensive contacts”. Turkey does not recognize Cyprus, that is currently presiding over the EU, since Turkish troops invaded the northern part of the island in 1974, splitting it in two. Turkey has been in negotiations to join the EU since 2005 and it has consequently boycotted all high-level EU meetings chaired by Cyprus since July. Herman Van Rompuy (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
