Pope Benedict XVI has called on young Catholics in Spain to resist the temptation to follow "fashionable ideas" and build their lives on solid foundations. That is "in contrast to someone who builds on sand - we would say today in what appears a paradise - but which collapses with the first gust of wind and falls into ruins," the 84-year-old pontiff said in the address on a massive stage in Madrid's Plaza Cibeles. Pope calls on Catholics to “resist fashionable ideas” "To all those who are content to follow fashionable ideas, they take shelter in the here and now, forgetting true justice, or they take refuge in their own opinions instead of seeking the simple truth,” the pope said. He arrived in Madrid earlier on Thursday at the Catholic World Youth Day festival which started on Tuesday and will last until Sunday. More than million young Catholics from 193 countries are expected to come. Spanish police blocked entrances to the square after about 100 opponents of the pope’s visit had gathered in downtown Madrid. Subway under the square was also closed for traffic. Police thwarted plans of about 100 gays to kiss along the route Benedict XVI drove by in his popemobile. Around 50 demonstrators were kissing in front of police who outnumbered them and dispersed them only an hour after the pope went by. Spanish King Juan Carlos and Quee Sofia welcomed the pope yesterday morning. Later he drove through the Madrid streets in his popemobile and was greeted by numerous believers. Several hours ahead of the pope’s arrival the protesters clashed with believers and anti-riot police. Police have announced that seven protesters were arrested and that 11 persons were injured.
