Iran has postponed the release of an American woman held for more than a year on suspicion of spying. Sarah Shourd was expected to be freed on Saturday, but the Iranian prosecutor in charge of the case Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi now says the legal process has not been completed. They and their families insist they were hiking in northern Iraq and strayed over the border at the time of their arrest in July last year. However, Tehran claims it has proof the three have links to U.S. intelligence services. Washington says the spying allegations are unfounded.

Iran’s foreign ministry earlier said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had intervened. No new release date for her has been set.

Shourd and two American men are being held in a hotel in the Iranian capital.

They and their families insist they were hiking in northern Iraq and strayed over the border at the time of their arrest in July last year.

However, Tehran claims it has proof the three have links to U.S. intelligence services. Washington says the spying allegations are unfounded.
