A former U.S. soldier faces the death penalty for his part in the rape and murder of an Iraqi teenager and her family. One-time Private Steven Green was found guilty of attacking the family in their house outside Baghdad in 2006. The men had been drinking heavily as they plotted the attack. Three of the other soldiers pleaded guilty at miltiary courts martial, and the fourth was convicted. They received prison terms of five to 100 years. The court heard that Green had bragged about what they had done, calling it ‘awesome’. The defense acknowledged his actions, but said he was suffering combat stress after the deaths of close collegues, and no longer knew friend from foe.
