Police on Saturday detained five foreigners on Beijing's politically sensitive Tiananmen Square. It came after they staged an Olympic protest calling for an end to repression in Tibet, an activist group said. Tibet protesters detained on Tiananmen Square The five protesters from the United States, Germany and Canada staged a "mock die-in" draped in Tibetan flags on the north side of the square under the portrait of iconic revolutionary Mao Zedong, the Free Tibet Campaign said. Police detained the protesters about 10 minutes into the demonstration, the group said in a statement. "The Chinese government is seeking to cover up its ugly occupation of Tibet with the bright lights of the Olympics," group spokesman Matt Whitticase said. "Our action at Tiananmen Square today highlights the determination of Tibetans and people of conscience that no amount of repression from the Chinese government will extinguish the desire of Tibetans for freedom and to speak out against China's worsening abuses in Tibet." Tiananmen Square is particularly sensitive for China's communist rulers as it was the focal point for pro-democracy protests in 1989 that the military eventually crushed with deadly force. Free Tibet campaign identified the five activists as David Demes from Germany, Evan Silverman, Diane Gatterdam and Joan Roney from the United States, and Chris Schwartz from Canada. Beijing police declined to comment on the action when contacted by AFP. The incident occurred after three foreign pro-Tibet activists staged a brief protest near Beijing's Olympic stadium Friday, one hour before the start of the opening ceremony for the Games. The three were reportedly deported from China Saturday. On Wednesday, four Western activists also scaled a pole near the Olympic village and unfurled giant "Free Tibet" banners before police could encircle and detain them. The four, two Britons and two Americans were detained and then deported in a matter of hours.
