The Turkish premier and foreign minister have welcomed Greece's foreign minister Dora Bakoyanni for Cyprus talks in Ankara. Bakoyanni and her opposite number Ali Babacan say they believe there is now a "window of opportunity" this year to progress towards a settlement between the divided island's Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. Greece, Turkey seize chance on Cyprus Since 1974 the north has been occupied by Turkey, and only Ankara recognizes the north as a separate state. The EU recognizes only the south as a legitimate entity. But in 2004 Greek Cypriots rejected a UN reunification plan, and peace talks have been frozen since then. Now Cyprus has a new President, Demetris Christofias, who said on Thursday he is likely to meet the Turkish Cypriot's leader later this month. It would be the first such meeting in years. Christofias has vowed to restart reunification talks, and Turkey is likely to support this, as the division of Cyprus is a major obstacle to Turkish EU membership.
