Moscow won’t recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia in response to the West’s recognition of Kosovo independence. Deputy Russian Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said at a press conference in Munich that Russia would not recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia the day after Kosovo declared independence. “Moscow won’t recognize Abkhazia, South Ossetia” Even though Russia’s support of the two provinces has caused tensions with Georgia, Moscow has rejected the calls of separatist leaders to recognize their independence. Analysts have suggested that Moscow, perturbed by Georgia’s aspirations to join NATO and the EU, could recognize the independence of the two provinces in retaliation to the West recognizing Kosovo.
