A striking worker of the Iskra Metal company from the town of Novi Pazar has hammered a nail into his own hand in order to bring attention to his protest. The man was identified as Halko Drustinac. He was involved in a strike of the company's disabled workers which started 115 days ago. Striker hammers nail into own hand “I beg the citizens to forgive me. I’m doing this consciously because of the injustice the state is doing to us,” Drustinac was quoted as saying. “We’ve had executive (court) verdicts for five years now and they won’t respect their own laws,” he said, and explained that the strikers demanded payment of 21 overdue wages. Drustinac drove a nail between his thumb and index finger today around noon, said reports from Novi Pazar. The strikers, among whom are those disabled during their employment with the company, are staging their strike at the poorly-lit premises of the Association of Textile Workers. Drustinac said that he tried to contact Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic, Human and Minority Rights Minister Rasim Ljajic and Justice Minister Snezana Malovic but that he received no replies. Drustinac also said that he would "continue to put nails into his hand", while his colleague Vejsel Mehmedovic warned that he was "ready to nail himself down at the town center". This is not the first time that workers have reached for extreme ways of protest in the southwestern Serbian town of Novi Pazar. Last year, a striking textile worker cut off his own finger, and then ate it.
