A commemoration to honor Biljana Kovacevic-Vuco was held in Belgrade on Wednesday. Besides her family and closest friends, representatives of almost all NGOs, public figures, representatives of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), whose member of presidency Kovacevic-Vuco was, and other parties attended the commemoration. Commemoration for human rights activist Addressing the gathering, Faculty of Law Professor Stevan Lalic said that Kovacevic-Vuco had been a human rights icon in Serbia. “She was brave and beautiful. Those are the features one gets from the family, but Biljana was also an exceptional person. She was extremely smart, an extraordinary legal and social mind, but also an exceptional mind of justice. What she did together with her associates in her organization was laying of foundations of a new value system in Serbia. Everything she touched turned into institutions of modern society,” he said. Journalist and author of the Pescanik radio show Svetlana Lukic said that Kovacevic-Vuco had an outstanding personality. “Biljana lived in a country in which, during the past quarter of a century, almost every day at least once you had to do your best in order to remain a decent human being. Only those made from good clay can withstand that. Biljana Kovacevic-Vuco was first-class human material. She showed that during Milosevic’s regime but in the so-called democratic Serbia, too,” Lukic was quoted.
