B92 is supporting the Hunger Strike Against Hunger campaign with all its capacities, along with the ambitious and important Food for Everyone program. B92 Editor-in-Chief Veran Matic said that the Serbian society was not socially emancipated enough and humane enough when it was dealing with lesser problems than the ones citizens are faced with now. B92 joins campaigns to combat hunger “We now have about 700,000 poor persons according to the criteria of the World Bank, which is 10 percent of the Serbian population; according to UNICEF, at least 150,000 children are going hungry. Only 10 percent of them are covered by state social programs. That means that more than 600,000 people receive no help at all,” Matic warned. He reminded that according to surveys, the poor are the most discriminated, and include the weakest and most vulnerable groups: the elderly, children and minorities such as the Roma – "so it is clear that they have no chance to fight their way out of the desperate position they find themselves in". According to Matic, the state does not have a serious and strong strategy, and it cannot solve problems of this magnitude on its own. For this reason, he continued, a large front is needed, especially in the next year. “That is why we will dedicate a lot of our time to 'Food for All' with the goal of solving concrete problems for a certain number of those who need our help the most. If we succeed in our intentions, the number of soup kitchens and distribution centers for food should increase with the implementation of new mechanisms for food and basic needs,” Matic said. The B92 editor-in-chief added that the campaign is expected to last one year, and in that time, "the state institutions should reorganize and prepare a more effective form of social protection". In the meantime, 57,000 members of the Alliance of Independent Unions in Novi Sad have joined the humanitarian campaign Hunger Strike Against Hunger. The campaign calls on participants to "refrain from food" on October 16, World Food Day, and in this way show solidarity and increase hunger awareness.
