Culture Minister Nemanja Bradic says that the National Museum plays an insufficient role in cultural life. The management and staff of the National Museum in Belgrade have sent a public letter in reaction to the ministry’s assessment that their work was insufficient, contending that it was actually the ministry that was to blame for the delays in the Museum’s reconstruction. Culture Ministry, National Museum in dispute Speaking to B92, Bradic rebuffed the claims, stressing that the Museum must not be allowed to turn into an “aesthetic warehouse.“ “If we’re talking about museums, yes they are in the process of reconstruction, but there are numerous venues both at home and abroad where exhibitions could be held,“ said the minister. Bradic stressed that he was aware that the National Museum had held 121 exhibitions in Serbia and over 20 abroad in the last five years. “I know. That’s a good figure, but it could be better,“ he said. Reconstruction of the Museum, said the minister, is behind schedule because the contract his predecessors had signed on a depot for storing artworks from the National Museum was not legally valid. He said that he would be speaking today with National Museum representatives about further reconstruction of the Museum’s premises. Nemanja Bradic (FoNet, archive)
