Croatia has not even remotely honored the elementary human rights of persecuted Serbs, some of whom have not been allowed to return to their homes. At a press conference today in Tanjug's International Press Center, representatives of Associations of Serb Refugees from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina said that Croatia was showing a " clean face " to the international community, without actually having honored the rights of Serbs in terms of property and pensions acquired in that country. "Croatia obstructing returns" According to President of the Association of Serbs from Croatia Milojko Budimir, Croatia has skillfully managed to avoid resolving the issue of the return of refugees and to present itself as a democratic country in which such problems no longer exist. The scheduled meeting between Croatian and Serbian representatives in Geneva never took place because, it was said, the Croatian side insisted on covering general issues, in spite of Zagreb’s failure to solve specific problems pertaining to the plight of Croatian Serbs. Chairman of the Society for Peace Dusan Ecimovic said that Serbia had clearly requested that meeting in Geneva under the mediation of the High Commissioner for Refugees in order to discuss the lost tenancy rights of Croatian Serbs living as refugees in Serbia, issues related to unpaid pensions in Croatia, Serbian participation in privatizations, as well as war crimes and missing persons issues. The Croatian side called this provocation and the meeting was canceled, said Ecimovic. He said that the Croatian Law on State Welfare had legalized the seizure of tenancy rights from Serbs for redistribution to Croat refugees from Bosnia-Hercegovina, all with a view “to entrenching political ethnic cleansing.” The Law on Agricultural Land raises the same questions, as its application entails further confiscation of Serb property, the deletion of Serbs’ names from land and electoral registers and legalizing the results of ethnic cleansing, it was stated at the press conference.
