Former Hague spokesperson Florence Hartmann said that there was "no evidence of the supposed Holbrooke-Karadzic deal." In a statement given to daily Dnevni Avaz, Hartmann said that she had never made such an accusation in her recently published book. "No evidence of Holbrooke-Karadzic deal" Some believe that a deal was struck that allowed Karadzic to remain at large if he gave up all his political posts in the Republic of Srpska. She also said that the documents that the Serbian media had used to try and prove the existence of this agreement, were not authentic. She confirmed that U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke was unwavering in his insistence on the arrest of former Bosnian Serb leader and Hague fugitive Radovan Karadzic, but believed that Holbrooke was probably one of the few U.S. officials with such views at the time. Hartmann said that it was logical for people to question the U.S.’s determination to arrest Karadzic and the other main Bosnian Serb fugitive Ratko Mladic, since both have been on the run for twelve years now.
