They were waiting to catch the first train of the day headed for Serbia: the 04:40 from Gevgelija to Tabanovce.

The migrants were also patiently waiting in line to receive papers that allow them to stay in Macedonia legally for up to 72 hours, as the police station is located right next to the railway station.

Young Kurds from Syria told a Tanjug reporter they were escaping the war, having sold all their property in that country so they could join their friends and relatives in Germany, "where they are willing to do any work."

"People are very dangerous in Syria and people die every day. On the other hand, in European countries like Serbia, Germany, and others, people are very nice," said Adam Elhadad, adding there was "nothing left for him in Syria."

The railway station will become very crowded at ten o'clock in the morning, when another train for Tabanovce, on Macedonia's border with Serbia, departs. More than a thousand migrants take this route every day.

They are also traveling on trains running from Thessaloniki to Belgrade.

The migrants in Macedonia say they intend to reach Serbia, Hungary, and then western European countries, "because safe life awaits them there."

In Gevgelija, the migrants - many among them children - sleep and sit on mats on the ground, "or wherever they can," Tanjug said.
